In today’s fast-paced world, where wealth, resources, and time are in constant demand, stewardship is more important than ever. For those who desire to live according to biblical principles, it’s essential to understand that everything we have—our finances, resources, and time—belongs to God. He calls us to be faithful managers of these blessings, and Scripture provides clear guidance on how to steward them wisely.

Let’s explore practical ways to steward our money, resources, and time biblically.

Stewarding Money

Acknowledge God’s Ownership

The Bible is clear that everything we have ultimately belongs to God. Psalm 24:1 says, “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.” Recognizing that our finances are a gift from God changes our perspective on money, transforming it from something we “own” to something we’re responsible to manage well.

Avoid Debt

Debt can be a significant barrier to freedom and generosity. Proverbs 22:7 warns, “The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender.” Managing our finances with wisdom includes avoiding unnecessary debt and paying off existing debts as quickly as possible. Debt is sometimes necessary, but it should be approached cautiously, with a plan for repayment.

Budget Wisely

Creating a budget helps us plan and manage our resources which increases our chances of future success. Proverbs 21:5 says, “The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.” Diligent planning allows us to live within our means, save for future needs, and give generously. A biblical budget prioritizes necessities, aligns with God’s values, and makes room for generosity.

Give Generously

Generosity is a core principle in God’s economy. 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 says, “God loves a cheerful giver.” When we give, we’re investing in God’s kingdom and demonstrating faith in His provision. Tithing, supporting ministries, and helping those in need are all ways to live out generosity. This not only blesses others but brings joy to the giver.

Stewarding Resources

Be Diligent and Resourceful

The Bible praises diligence and resourcefulness. Proverbs 31:16 speaks of a woman who wisely considers a field and buys it, then uses it to plant a vineyard. We’re called to use the resources we have—whether property, skills, or possessions—in ways that are fruitful and multiply blessings.

Practice Contentment

Our culture promotes the idea that “more is better,” but the Bible teaches contentment. Hebrews 13:5 says, “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have.” Contentment enables us to be satisfied with what we have rather than constantly striving for more. This attitude of gratitude guards us against materialism and frees us to use our resources generously.

Be a Responsible Caretaker of Creation

God created the earth and entrusted it to humanity. As stewards, we’re responsible for taking care of His creation. Genesis 1:28 says, “Fill the earth and subdue it.” This doesn’t mean exploiting resources but rather managing them responsibly. From conserving energy to recycling and reducing waste, caring for creation is part of our biblical stewardship.

Invest Wisely and Prudently

Investing can be a means of growth, but it should be approached wisely. Ecclesiastes 11:2 advises us to “invest in seven ventures, yes, in eight; you do not know what disaster may come upon the land.” Diversifying and seeking wise counsel allows us to manage risk, make sound decisions, and protect our resources against unforeseen challenges.

Stewarding Time

Prioritize Your Relationship with God

Our time is one of our most precious resources, and the Bible emphasizes spending it in ways that honour God. Matthew 6:33 says, “Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness.” Begin each day with prayer, study Scripture, and remain connected to God throughout your day. This focus will guide you in making wise choices about how to spend your time.

Plan and Set Boundaries

Proverbs 16:3 encourages us to “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” Planning and setting boundaries will allow us to spend time on what truly matters—faith, family, and purpose. Guarding against busyness and prioritizing rest is vital to healthy, balanced living.

Serve Others

Our time is not just for our benefit but for serving others. Galatians 5:13 says, “Serve one another humbly in love.” Look for opportunities to volunteer, help others, and give time to those in need. By doing so, we’re living out Christ’s example and honouring God.

Embrace Rest

Rest is a principle God modelled for us in creation. Genesis 2:2-3 tells us God rested on the seventh day, blessing and making it holy. Rest isn’t a luxury; it’s a command. Whether it’s a weekly Sabbath or regular breaks throughout the day, taking time to rest renews our minds and bodies, allowing us to be more effective stewards.

Conclusion: Faithful Stewardship Brings Glory to God

Stewarding money, resources, and time biblically isn’t always easy, but it’s deeply rewarding. By viewing ourselves as managers rather than owners, we honour God’s sovereignty and His gifts to us. Stewardship is ultimately an act of worship, reflecting our gratitude for His blessings and our commitment to His purposes.

Let’s commit to faithful stewardship, trusting that as we honour God with our money, resources, and time, He will guide, provide, and bless us in ways beyond measure.
